Criminal Defense

Offenses in Louisiana’s criminal law are generally broken down in felonies and misdemeanors. Felonies are those offenses that might require an accused to serve one year or more in prison at hard labor, and misdemeanors are generally those offenses that may require an individual to serve under one year at hard labor.

Like most other states, there are two requirements to be culpable of a criminal act. First there must be a mens rea (“evil” intent) which must be coupled with an actus rea(“evil” act). And, in most cases, there must be criminal intent coupled with criminal action.
